Don't Forget to Remember: FUSE Week

It's not often that you get paid to go clubbing for a week, but sometimes these things happen, and when they do, it's AWESOME (and tiring on your calves)!

And so it was this past summer when I was "lucky" enough to be in a photoshoot for FUSE, a 10+ million dollar nightclub here in Nashville (not as trashy as it sounds). 10 hour shoot days with dancing and smiling and heel-wearing. Craziness. FUSE describes itself as such:

"Fuse at Gaylord Opryland brings the excitement, sexiness and sophistication of Las Vegas to Music City but with the warmth and hospitality that only Nashville can bring. Before Fuse, clubs this hot only existed in places like Las Vegas, LA, New York and London…but now Nashville is the city and Fuse is the place to be seen. From the vodka locker to the fog machines; from the go-go dancers, to the daring mixologists; from the restrooms with see-thru panels to the VIP sections with cushy beds, Fuse is all about the WOW."

Wow. Cheesy.

As weird as it is to see the billboards and photos on buses and posters in the movie theatres, it was certainly a fun week, and I made some great friends.

Enjoy some behind the scenes footage:

My shoot buddy. We always seem to be at the same jobs.

Feeding time... kinda humorous.. guess you had to be there.

Ooooo

Ahhhh...

Don't Forget to Remember: The BANDITOS!

Otherwise known as Nashville flag-football's best kept secret.

While I missed the one win we've had in 3 seasons, it has certainly been fun nonetheless.

We may not have arm bands with plays, or a professional videographer, or a team full of individuals who look like a high school boys JV starting line.. but I think we pulled off a whole other kind of "fierce."

Ai-yi-yi-yi-yi!

Good luck next season ladies! I'll miss you!

Don't Forget to Remember: Food Fight 2006

In another moment of creative genius (or quite possibly, utter stupidity), I somehow decided that having an old fashioned food fight would be a lot of fun.

Aside from the freakishly cold temperature outside, and the disgusting "post food fight" stickiness that took a 30 minute shower and 2 loads of laundry to undo, I was right, it was fun!

Below are examples of the lows that young-twenty something's will stoop to in the name of fun (and also a good insight into the random things in our fridges and pantries: cooked ramen, strawberry syrup, eggs, flour, taco seasoning? awesome.)

Don't Forget to Remember: Pranks

There have been a few.... and most (actually, all but one) have been well-received. I'm only sad that I don't have pictures of them all. :(

This one is an oldie but a goody... my personal favorite.

My junior year during RA training, some fellow RA's and I got bored and decided to ave a little fun with one of the new RD's in Hillside (beloved Scott Hutcheson, for those of you who remember him). In a moment of what can only be described as GREATNESS, we came up with the following idea:

1. Shred 10-20 large yellow page phone books. Save shavings.
2. Take plastic wrap and ductape to Scott's doorframe
3. Fill blank space between door and plastic wrap with shredded phone books.

Can you imagine Scott's surprise when he opened his door the next morning? =)

Check this out.

In more recent days boredom has led to more stereotypical pranks:

Good times.

Don't Forget to Remember: ThriftSmart

It's the seemingly elusive object of every recent college graduates affection: the "real" job.

ThriftSmart was mine.

I was a lowly college grad with a music degree and after 5 months of multiple part time jobs I stumbled upon this little gem and somehow managed to acquire a position with them running communications. It had it's ups and downs, but it was what I needed at the time. I made some great friends (my co-workers supplied me with my own can of mace after hearing my tales of life at 516 Morton. Now that's love!!) and I found some AMAZING used goods. Many a party outfit was assembled thanks to ThriftSmart (not to mention 1/2 of my vinyl collection, every white elephant gift post 2005 AND my Lite-Brite).

From brunch "meetings" with Patricia, to my office pets, to cursing the existence of Excel... it was a good first job.

ThriftSmart affirmed my belief that you can have a weird degree like "music" or "art" and still land a real job just like everyone else.... It also reminded me of what I personally need/want out of a "real job."

So thanks ThriftSmart.

ps. it really is a great organization. All proceeds go to local non-profits. To learn more click THIS LINK.

Don't Forget to Remember: Live Anderson

Ahhh this one makes me smile. In the fall of 2007 a photographer friend of mine was looking to shoot bands to add to his portfolio. While finding a band in Nashville is about as hard as finding a tree in a forest, he thought it would be more fun to "create one" out of his friends... and thus, "Live Anderson" was born.

I forget how we came up with the name.. but I remember it involved a billboard or something we saw on our way to the parking garage downtown where this shot was taken. I lost my voice before this "shoot" but we still had a good time... Especially when we stopped by starbucks (dressed accordingly) after we wrapped.

Don't Forget to Remember: RUF

Another big part of my time in Nashville and in Belmont was wrapped up in Reformed University Fellowship (aka: RUF). What's strange is that I went to RUF my very first week at Belmont with a fellow transfer friend of mine.. and I hated it. I don't really remember what it was that I didn't like, it just felt a little "too different" to me or something. So I never went back.

Until a year later when I found out that a friend of mine went. We had a lot of similar interests and I figured if he could stand it, then maybe I should give it another chance. So I went again my junior year, and this time things clicked.

Looking back I see that I can attribute most of my Nashville friendships to RUF. From small groups, to Wednesday night meetings, to trips to connecting me with my current church, I have a lot of memories with RUF. And even though I'm not involved in it anymore, and I may disagree from time to time, RUF still holds a very special place in my heart... and I am very thankful that I gave it a second chance.

Don't Forget to Remember.

With about 2 weeks left in Nashville I thought I would sporadically post some pictures and memories as a minute representation of some of the great times that I've had here over the past 5.5 years.

Because I am a sentimental freak of nature, there may be a lot of these. We'll call this series "Don't Forget to Remember..."

This first post takes us back a ways to the fall of 2003. I had just arrived in Tennessee by way of a summer in Frankfurt, Germany. I was 19, and a sophomore at Belmont.

The following is actually the only picture I have of my entire sophomore year. I know other pictures were taken, but who knows where they are now. Pictured below are April, Ann and myself. We all met through our transfer student addition of "Towering Traditions".. in fact, I think we became fast friends because none of us ever went to any of the TT stuff. Funny how that works. Anyhow, one night we were sitting around Bruin Hills being bored and we decided to dress up and go see/participate in a midnight showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Belcourt. It was the first (and only, to date) time I had seen it...

Good times were had by all.

12.02.2008

Christmas came early...

It was a good week:
  • 2,000 miles.
  • 4 bad-ass desserts made by yours truly.
  • 2 shows.
  • A successful surgery for mom.
  • A night in Dallas
  • and of course:

OU is championship bound (our QB can fly!):

New Hair:

New Car!!!!!!!!:

(and in case Dave Ramsey is stalking me... I don't owe a penny on anything shown above. woohoo!)

ps.. can anyone tutor me in how to make pictures in posts appear in reader feeds? I know it's possible, but I don't know how to do it. thnx!)

In Honor of World AIDS Day..

I'm a day behind since I spent yesterday on the road.. but I came across this recently and thought it was perfect.

Cheers for someone getting it right.

Why the BCS should rank OU above Texas tomorrow:

1. The Sooners played the No. 2 team in the country (Texas Tech) and won by 44 points.... after UT LOST to them.
2. The Sooners just played the No. 11 team in the country (OSU) in their own place, where no one else has beat them, and won by 20. Meanwhile, Texas only beat them by 4 points at their home stadium in Austin.
3. We hold the nations highest scoring offense.
4. Tonight was our fourth straight 60-point game.
5. If Texas should be ahead because they beat us... then shouldn't Texas Tech be ahead of Texas??
6. Texas claims victories over several "#1 ranked teams" however.. I'm sorry but a #1 ranked team in the first 5 weeks of college football season means nothing! Especially when your strength of schedule lies at the end of your season!! (doubt me? research how many teams held the coveted #1 spot this year)

Ultimately I think it comes down to a teams overall body of work in the season, not just the head-to-head. While the head-to-head is certainly important, it is by no means a tie breaker (obviously! look where the head-to-head thinking has us now!). The way Texas uses logic, Tech should be ahead of them, and yet we killed Tech. Sometimes I think if we hadn't humiliated them, and say only won by I dunno.. ten points or something, then maybe people would take Tech a little more seriously and we would be having a different conversation.

Bottom line: if you are judging by the season, and the overall body of work, then OU comes out on top every time. In fact, every other standard of judging: the point system and all put OU ahead.

Please don't be stupid BCS. I know you can't help it... but please do the right thing... and next year, give us a playoff system!

K? Thnx!

Bullet Point Update.

  • I'm obsessed with this song and his entire live album. (and I am not ashamed! So don't even start with me, haters.)
  • I kinda miss my "bed" which I haven't seen since August.
  • I read Skinny Bitch recently (just to see what the fuss was about!) and it has really messed with my food world.
  • After perusing old pics and posts I'm now contemplating doing a few "photo memory" posts of good times in Nashville when I get back from Thanksgiving.
  • I'm playing in a round here in Nashville this Saturday night. You should come.
  • I found a keyboard I like (finally) that I hope I can get.
  • I really, really, REALLY want a new-to-me car.
  • Next time you go to Whole Foods, try one of their vegan chocolate chip cookies. Pretty sure they are AMAZING. I still don't believe they are really vegan.
  • I've concluded that time is moving much too fast!! I've got too much to do, too many people to see and too little time!! Don't give up on me though, I'll make it work!

11.11.2008

Ok, but really...

I'm freaking out a little bit.

About this whole "moving" business... there are moments (like now) where I sit back and say "woah woah woah... wait a second! I can't move. Nashville is home! I'm comfortable here. I've got a "job." I know my way around. I have my favorite radio station preset in my car. I subscribe to nashvillest. The Titans are 9-0! I can't move!

I'm torn people.

Because the truth is, I am comfortable here, and I think that's part of my problem. I'm comfortable in a life that, while not completely miserable, certainly isn't going anywhere. And if you know me, you know I like to go. It dawned on me today that 2008 will pass without me having been on a plane (that I can remember anyway).. I'm not OK with that! Granted, I drove all over the place, but still. No plane rides. That may be the first time in 10 years that that's happened to me.

Anyhow, I've just been craving a new start... and I've been craving it for a while. Tour was the final nail in the coffin for me I think. I left thinking I would come back knowing how I felt about things: music, the future, etc. And I did. The only problem was, I had anticipated feeling the exact opposite. I did not expect to enjoy it as much as I did, I did not expect to dread returning to Nashville, and I did not expect to fall in love with music, and writing, and playing all over again.. but I did. And it has thrown me. I don't know if this is the direction I should even be going in, or if I am just wasting my time, but I guess I'll find out. I just hope the journey is fun.

So I'm off to my new beginning, and praying that I won't regret this somewhat random decision. For the record, I never dreamed I would pick Austin. I'm not even sure how I feel about it now, less than 2 months away from taking my life there. I would much rather it be New York or Seattle or San Diego. But I have to be realistic. I'm 3 months away from 25... I'm young, and I'm poor, and I've got my entire future to relocate to one of the more expensive cities on this continent. I really want to live in NY one day, and knowing me, I probably will. But I need to be smart... moving to one of the aforementioned cities while I am working so hard (and progressing!) to get out of debt (and pursue music), would only set me back rather than push me ahead. If I am going to wander aimlessly through my 20's I should probably do it in a place that won't compromise my 30's, even if I'd rather have it the other way around. As much as I subscribe to the idea that we should do the things we want to do while we can do them, I also believe there is something to be said about being patient and responsible from time to time, even if it's not uber fun. (and it isn't)

**side note: this is not to say that this is the route for everyone. I have several friends in these places that are doing fine and loving it.. but everyone's situation is different!

So I'm off to a city I'm not all that fond of yet, to live for a while. I don't have a job there and I have no idea what I'm going to do (aside from playing out around the midwest as often as I can). But it will be new, and it will be different.

And I think that's what I need right now.

...and I hope I'm right.

11.07.2008

Leaving?

Hello friends.

As many of you have heard (or have deduced by now), my time in Nashville is coming to a close. In about a month and a half I will head home for Christmas and I won't be coming back. Instead I'll be relocating to a place even I find difficult to believe: Austin, TX.

This decision brings with it many mixed feelings for me, but most are positive.

I have loved the majority of my time here in Nashville, but honestly the past couple of years have found me spending more time planning ways to leave and on harder days, wishing I had never come... and I really don't believe that life was meant to be lived that way. Don't get me wrong, I have few regrets, and I don't regret my time here. I've had some incredible experiences and have forged (what I hope will be) lifelong friendships. In truth, those friendships are part of what kept me here long after I should have left. I love you guys, and if there is anything I do not look forward to, it's those initial weeks of change that I'll have without you there. But at the end of the day I realized I've been unhappy here. .. and when I'm honest, I have to admit that I haven't been happy in a long time. (not that happiness is everything, but you know..)

When I sat down to consider what it is that was really keeping me in Nashville the primary response it kept boiling down to was fear. Fear that my music will die if I go. Fear that I'll miss out on something great if I leave. Fear that I'll hate whatever opportunity I take on next. Fear that I won't find equally great musicians to work with somewhere else. Fear that I will feel even lonelier than I have in Nashville..etc etc.

When I saw that as my reason for staying, I knew it was time to go. Because I never have, and never hope to live my life out of fear. I'm willing to be afraid, but I would much rather do it in the face of something new and potentially growing, than be held captive by it in a place where (it feels like) I've already died.

Once I was willing to let that go I started realizing a lot of other things, like the fact that I enjoy music when I am out doing it and I do (what I feel is) my best writing when I am out playing consistently, and that I find myself creating more when I am playing more.. and then the obvious: I make it a point to play out more when I am not here. Accepting this about myself and realizing that leaving Nashville could potentially be the best thing for my music, also made things easier.

So how does a gal who isn't big on heat, UT, or the state of Texas come to decide on Austin, you ask?
Well after spending a year causally entertaining various options, in the end it was a lot of little things rolled together: having my brother there, being a music city, having a manageable cost of living, finding free rent for a bit (woohoo!), being 5 hours closer to home, having extended family close by, having a small fan base in Tejas to work from, and one of my favorite perks: the central location..which will hopefully be beneficial when it comes to booking shows in various places... we shall see.

My reason for putting all this out there is 3-fold.
1. There was a time when I thought of leaving Nashville by stealing away into the night without a word, much less a good-bye. But that would have been running away, and that's not how I'd want to be remembered. Besides, but let's face it: I am, sadly, nothing if not sentimental. Nashville has held and shared the past 5.5 years of my life, and that alone deserves a good-bye. That warrants an explanation.

2. The closer moving day comes, the more I realize that there are so many people in Nashville that I want to spend time with before I leave. If you live in Nashville and this has found it's way to you, then you are probably included in that. These next few weeks will be crazy for me, but not to crazy to get some good chill time in... so please call me!

3. I'm not afraid of moving to a city where I know next to no one (obviously) but at the same time, it's always nice to have people you know you can call. So: Texas people, Austin people, consider this my humble cry for friendship. I've got references...

Well there you have it. As of this moment, it looks as though December 20th will be my last day in Nashville. I'm sad, but hopeful.. and yes, a little excited. Patty always said you should always know how long to stay and when to go.. and I think it's time to go.

Here's to change!
~Danica

11.05.2008

Well, we're still here!

.. and I believe it's oxygen I'm breathing, and not socialist happy gas.. but I could be wrong. =)

I kid, I kid..

In all seriousness though, I feel privileged to have been a part of this election and to have been able to witness, and be a part of, history in the making. Regardless of how you feel about the results, I do hope you take some pride in how far this country has come.. in my opinion that's what makes America truly great, that we have the freedom to take on an issue and work for the progress we believe in... to even have that opportunity.. that's what America means to me. We aren't some "great white hope" we aren't even always on the forefront of progress (as we've been deceived into believing all too often), sometimes we get things completely wrong.. but at the end of the day we still have the chance, and the right as individuals in this country to turn it around, and that's a lot more than most countries can say. So while feelings toward Obama certainly span across the board, I think you can't ignore the fact that His election win truly embodies what it means to be an American... on a number of levels.

Two additional things stand out to me about yesterday. 1. 88 years ago women could not vote in this country. This year women out voted men and carried 53% of the vote. Way to go ladies! I think of all the women across the world who are denied voting rights, or even access to education and in a small way I feel as though I am voting on their behalf every time I vote (cheesy yeah, but seriously..so many women wish they could vote and can not.. don't take it for granted!) and 2. The increased minority and "youth" voter turnout is impressive as well. Youth (ages 18-29) are not as apathetic as we are made out to be, and that is certainly clear in light of this election (if not on facebook.. sheesh). Sure, I still know a handful of people in my age group who didn't bother voting (or complained about it a lot).. but the majority of those did so out of some sense of intentional inaction in defiance to a 2 party system or whatnot, not because they didn't care.. so yeah. Interesting results this time around.

Anyhow.. congratulations on progress America, because all politics aside, you gotta admit that this is kinda incredible:

11.03.2008

On the Brink of an Historic Day

(because really, whoever wins will be making history)

I'd like to do my part to remind you (even though I'd wager that those who read this won't forget) to vote (if you haven't already).

As for me, I voted last Tuesday, and I kept my word by voting for the individual who I thought spent most of their campaign time/dollars advertising themselves, their strengths, and their plan as opposed to the weaknesses of their opponent. =) (ok, that and a bunch of other reasons too)

As this election comes to a close, part of me will miss it, but most of me is thankful. I'm thankful because elections in general are incredible divisive. From people who assume there is a "christian" way to vote, to those who do nothing but blindly bash the opposing side, to those who refuse to vote because Ron Paul isn't running.. I'm always amazed at what election season brings out in people.

I've been told it's a sin to vote for Obama. I've been told it isn't worth voting because none of the options are viable. I've been told I shouldn't, as a christian, even have to consider who to vote for. I've been told a vote for McCain is a vote for more of the same. I've been told that Obama is a terrorist, and a socialist. I've been told that both Sarah Palin and Barack Obama are only where they are because of their minority status. I've been told that Ron Paul was the hope for America.

The christian thing really gets me... on the one hand you've got people who claim that they believe that God is sovereign, yet they apparently aren't happy about who he's chosen to be on the ticket or worse they say God is sovereign yet predict the end of the world if the other team wins... and on the other hand you've got people who presume to know "God's will" and as such aren't ashamed to label "Godless" those who are in opposition to what they believe. Give me a break.

News flash: As I'm sure I've mentioned before, the world will keep spinning regardless of who is elected. We aren't going to wake up a socialist nation on January 21st if Obama is elected, and we aren't going to eliminate welfare if McCain becomes president. (and believe it or not... heaven would not come to reside on earth if Ron Paul had made it through either..) Get a grip people!

Honestly, your senate and your congress are ultimately just as (if not far more) important than your president is. Especially you single-issue voters out there.. do you hear me? Do you understand what I am saying? A president alone is not going to make abortion illegal or legal. Stop dreaming and wake up! Veto power, yes. a president has that.. but they can't just make up a law and demand it's existence. It's called checks and balances, and honestly this is why voting based on one or two issues alone is somewhat ridiculous (and I mean that as loving as possible). I think of the number of people I know who voted for Bush back in 04 based on abortion alone..and lo and behold, here we are EIGHT YEARS later and what all has been done about that issue? and yet still.. people cling to these ideals.. I just don't get it.

Ultimately, I rest secure in the fact that I believe that Jesus is the only hope for anything. No candidate, no ideal, no country...Jesus. And because my future doesn't hang in the balance of who wins this election, or even who I vote for, then I am free to research and choose which person I believe will help the most people and hinder the least and then go forward without fear... so that if welfare is eliminated, or we do become socialist (and I can barely type it without laughing), in the end, nothing really changes for me. Nothing that really and truly matters anyway. My future is still secure, and my calling (to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God) remains unchanged.

So in light of these thoughts.. I encourage you to vote for the person you agree with. Whoever that may be... (though i do hold a stronger case for one of them if you are undecided or persuadable)

May the right man win.

http://www.sojo.net/blog/godspolitics/?p=3287

Oh and ladies.. not to go all "feminist" on you or anything.. but you do realize that we obtained the right to vote not even 100 years ago, right? I mean.. that's amazing. There are universities that are older than our right to vote! We had cars and 48 states before we could vote. Gracious, the toaster has been around longer than our right to vote! We could argue cases before the Supreme Court before we could vote. Not to mention that women in New Zealand, Australia, Finland, Norway, Denmark Canada, Austria, Germany, Poland, Russia and the Netherlands could vote before we could! If you do any research at all on the work that was done by women in the early 1900's in an effort to gain suffrage, you would probably never miss an election. Seriously. I'm just saying...

217 days 9 hours 16 minutes and 46 Tasks left...

As some of you may recall, back in September of 2006 I made a list of 101 things I wanted to do in 1001 days. Fast forward 2 years and I now have roughly 8 months to finish 46 tasks. Below is an overview of the project along with an update on my completed tasks (complete with a few editors notes.. oo la la)

Where it all Started: http://www.triplux.com/dayzero/default.asp?view=gettingstarted

The Mission:
Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.

The Criteria:
Tasks must be specific (ie. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (ie. represent some amount of work on my part).

Why 1001 Days?
Many people have created lists in the past - frequently simple goals such as new year's resolutions. The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organising and timing some tasks such as overseas trips or outdoor activities.

Items in BOLD have been completed! Hooray!

I'm ready for Novemeber 5th..

Just a friendly reminder to take part in early voting (if you can) to save the stress of lines on election day.

Also another friendly reminder to turn off the tv and ignore all political conversation until this blows over... and if that doesn't appeal to you, then at least use your brain in the midst of all the propaganda.

Did anyone else hear about this?

(note: not cnn, not fox... NPfreakingR!)

I know it's only one of many examples, but it really makes me sick that I could in any way potentially be lumped in with these people. For the record, James Dobson does NOT speak for me.

I said at the beginning of this election season that I would vote for the person who spent more of their advertising time (and campaign dollars) telling me why I should vote for them, versus why I shouldn't vote for the other guy. Now I know this article wasn't through any one person's campaign, but it certainly has been interesting to watch the advertisements & robocalls over the past few months. The way I see it, no party has done a flawless job, though in my opinion one has done less mud-slinging than the other.

Anyhow.. I'm not telling you who to vote for, because either way, the congress is more important. The world will keep spinning regardless of who is elected. Hell won't freeze over, the economy won't collapse (hasn't that happened already?) and I'd wager to say that almost everything FotF claims could happen, will never actually happen either.

Just vote so we can get this over with.

Pretty please?
